Cathy’s Cafe (operating under the Blessed Abilities Society) is a mission-driven social enterprise with a heart for inclusion. We’re here to empower young people with developmental disabilities through hands-on training, supportive mentorship, and meaningful employment—so they can grow in confidence, independence, and pride.

It all started with a dream…

Cathy’s Cafe began with a mother’s dream.

As the mother of a daughter with developmental disabilities, Cathy imagined a place where her daughter, Grace, and others like her could find more than employment—a place where people of all abilities could learn, grow, build confidence, contribute meaningfully, and truly belong.

Cathy loved visiting local cafes, and that simple joy inspired a bigger vision: one day, perhaps their family could create a cafe of their own, built around kindness, inclusion, opportunity, and community.

Although Cathy passed away in 2015, her family never lost sight of that dream. In 2025, an unexpected opportunity arose to open a cafe in their beloved Kerrisdale neighbourhood, bringing Cathy’s vision to life.

Today, Cathy’s Cafe carries forward the values she lived by: kindness, care, inclusion, safety, and love. It is a place where people of all abilities are welcomed, valued, and given the opportunity to grow and contribute.

We invite you to join us in creating a community where everyone has a seat at the table.

And continued with love.

After Cathy’s passing, Gary carried her dream forward with love and determination. Inspired by Cathy, and by his own journey as a father to Grace, he founded the Blessed Abilities Society in 2021 to create meaningful opportunities for young people with developmental disabilities—especially those who face barriers to employment after leaving school.

In 2023, Gary married Esther, and together with Esther and their children, Grace and Faith, the family continued building on Cathy’s vision. In 2025, they opened Cathy’s Cafe as a mission-driven social enterprise: a welcoming neighbourhood cafe that serves great food while creating real opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to learn, work, and grow.

Through hands-on training, meaningful paid employment, and partnerships with families, employment organizations, and community partners, Cathy’s Cafe helps team members build practical workplace skills, confidence, independence, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Today, Cathy’s vision continues through the work of her family and the team at Cathy’s Cafe. Faith leads the day-to-day operation of the cafe and oversees the Cafe Employment Training Program, working closely with trainers, team members, families, and community partners to create a supportive environment where each person can learn at their own pace, develop their strengths, and contribute in meaningful ways.

Together, the family and team continue to carry Cathy’s dream forward—creating a place where people of all abilities are valued, supported, and given the opportunity to build a future filled with possibility.
